South Lakes boys won the Virginia High School League Class 6 championship game in Richmond on March 15 with a 68-60 win over C.G. Woodson Cavaliers. “After losing 11 players from last year's team and only returning Jordan Scott with playing experience, this group had to come together and play for each other,” said Head Coach Mike Desmond.
Most of the regular season was a chance for the players to grow in new roles (Alec Saunder, Cj Kemmemer) and other team members to learn to be major contributors (Merrick Rillstone, Toshi Elston). Leadership that Jordan provided, and the development of others lead to a historic fourth straight region title and a second straight state title.
Senior Jordan Scott scored 32 points, had nine rebounds, and went 7-for-7 with foul shots. Junior forward Merrick Rillstone scored 21 points, making all eight of his foul shots. In a breakthrough third quarter, he scored 11 points. Scott went on to win All State Player of the Year for Virginia and will go on to play basketball at Michigan State next year.
